Pickering Firm, Inc., as subconsultant to Kajima Design Build, provided civil engineering design, permitting, construction phase services, and environmental permitting for Yokohama’s latest North American tire manufacturing campus in West Point, Mississippi.

Located off Yokohama Blvd., approximately four miles east of Highway 45, the site is approximately 570 acres. Phase I of the new facility consists of approximately 700,000 SF under roof and includes Yokohama’s offices, raw materials receiving, tire manufacturing process, quality control laboratory, final product storage and shipping. The facility houses approximately 400 employees in the initial operation. The campus also includes raw materials storage building, inbound and outbound guardhouses, a canteen, hazardous materials storage and a waste storage building.

The new campus was designed to accommodate future expansion of multiple new manufacturing buildings, an office building, and a maintenance facility. Civil engineering design included all grading and drainage, storm water detention, erosion and sediment control, utilities and paving. Environmental permitting services included the development of the site-specific Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) Plan. The project included rough grading of the entire site and was designed to balance the earthwork for all future phases of development. The site package was designed under fast-track scheduling to allow for earthwork to begin in the summer of 2013. Extensive coordination with building disciplines was required to accommodate the building and utility systems.

Pickering also designed the 8,000 LF rail service per Kansas City Southern specifications to accommodate raw materials entering the project site.
