West Rankin Utility Authority (WRUA) provides regional wastewater collection services to its members in western Rankin County, MS through a system of wastewater interceptors. Wastewater collected by the interceptors is transported to an existing pumping station in the City of Jackson Savanna Street Wastewater Treatment Facility (WWTF). Pickering was selected to design a new WWTF that would discharge treated wastewater into the Pearl River.

The new WWTF has a capacity of treating up to 20 million gallons per day (MGD) of wastewater generated by WRUA members. The location of the treatment facility is approximately 2,000 feet upstream of the junction where the majority of system flow is collected. An influent pump station at this junction pumps raw wastewater to the headworks of the treatment facility. A smaller pump station is at the location of the old WRUA pump station and pumps wastewater generated by the City of Richland to the new influent pump station. The existing WRUA pump station, which currently pumps flow to the Savanna Street Wastewater Treatment Facility, will be modified to serve as the effluent pump station for the new treatment facility and will convey treated effluent to the discharge point in the Pearl River.

The WWTF is designed to biologically treat up to 20 MGD and is hydraulically designed to handle peak flows of up to 60 MGD. The facility will utilize an activated sludge process with biological nutrient removal capabilities. In addition to the main biological treatment process, the WWTF will also include unit processes typical of biological wastewater treatment facilities.
