Pickering provided all engineering design for the renovation and expansion of the Fine Arts Building at the University of Tennessee (UT) at Martin. This project provided a 16,000 gross-SF addition, bringing the total size of the building to 150,000 SF. HVAC, Plumbing, electrical and fire protection systems were replaced in both the existing and expanded facility.

The two-story building includes a band room, percussion hall, choir rehearsal hall, art classrooms and gallery, teaching and practice rooms, lecture halls and administration areas. A scene shop, prop storage, dressing rooms and an acting “black box” classroom are also included.

The project scope also included complete replacement of the HVAC systems, including the aging AHU’s that served the Fine Arts Fulton Theater. The project also addressed any safety issues associated with the theater lighting and curtain rigging system.

HVAC work included:

  • Connection to the campus chilled water/steam distribution systems

  • Replacement/resizing of basement AHU that served the first floor

  • Replacement/relocation of 2nd Floor AHU to the penthouse

  • Dedicated AHUs for Scene Shops, Choral and Band Room

  • Connection to the Campus BMS

  • Humidity-controls to preserve valuable musical instruments

  • Extensive interface with Jones-Phillips Associates to coordinate duct locations in the black-box theater
