Carl Ray Furr Receives State and Local Recognition for Lifetime of Service
Pickering Firm is proud to celebrate Carl Ray Furr, PE, who recently received special recognition from the Mississippi State Senate and the City of Pearl in honor of his 89th birthday and nearly 60 years of service as a professional engineer.
The commendation, presented by Lieutenant Governor Delbert Hosemann and Senator Dean Kirby, recognizes Carl Ray's longstanding contributions to the engineering profession and the communities he has served throughout Mississippi. The City of Pearl also issued a proclamation honoring his more than five decades of service as City Engineer, a role he has held since 1974.
Throughout his career, Carl Ray has helped shape infrastructure projects that have supported growth, economic development, and improved quality of life across Mississippi. After graduating from Mississippi State University with a degree in Civil Engineering, he co-founded Engineering Associates in 1969 and built a career defined by public service and community impact.
Among his many accomplishments, Carl Ray led work on the regional wastewater interceptor system that connected Pearl, Richland, Flowood, and Brandon to Jackson's Savannah Street Wastewater Treatment Facility. At the time, it was the largest professional engineering contract ever awarded in Mississippi. His work also contributed to landmark projects including the Interstate 55 spheroid water tank and the widening of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge across the Pearl River.

The City of Pearl's proclamation highlights Carl Ray's leadership in securing federal funding and advancing infrastructure improvements that enhanced transportation, public safety, and community development. Over the course of his career, his engineering expertise has benefited municipalities, counties, and residents throughout Mississippi.
In addition to his project work, Carl Ray has been recognized as a Charter Member of the Mississippi State University Distinguished Engineering Fellows and received the Theodore Roosevelt Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies for distinguished service to the profession.
Since joining Pickering Firm in 1999, Carl Ray has continued to share his knowledge, experience, and commitment to public service with clients, colleagues, and communities across the region.
While reflecting on a career that spans nearly six decades, Carl Ray offered simple advice to the next generation of engineers: “Listen to your peers, seek advice, and embrace the mentorship offered by experienced professional engineers.”
The recent recognitions from the Mississippi State Senate and the City of Pearl serve as a fitting tribute to a career dedicated to improving Mississippi's infrastructure and strengthening the communities it serves. We congratulate Carl Ray on this well-deserved honor and thank him for his lasting contributions to our profession and our firm.
